Diagnosis of Lactose Intolerance

Lactose is a sugar found in milk. If it is not converted into glucose in the human body, it cannot be absorbed. This conversion occurs when lactose passes from the stomach to the small intestine and comes into contact with the enzyme lactase. If there is not enough lactase the lactose cannot be broken down and this in turn leads to lactose intolerance.

Lactase helps digest dairy products. It is an enzyme that hydrolyzes milk sugar (lactose) into parts made up of glucose and galactose.

Symptoms include:
• abdominal pain
• swelling or bloating
• excessive gas production
• rumbling bowels
• motion sickness
• abdominal cramps
• diarrhea

 

Symptoms usually appear 30 to 60 minutes after consuming dairy products.

Hydrogen measurement (breath detection) is easily achieved with the H Check portable device. One measurement is enough to display the results of the hydrogen concentration in PPM (parts per million) units.

The Hydrogen Breath Test measures the amount of hydrogen present in the breath.
Under normal conditions, very little hydrogen is detected in the breath. Undigested lactose in the colon is fermented by bacteria and various gases are produced, including hydrogen.

Hydrogen is absorbed from the intestines, transported through the circulatory system to the lungs and expelled through respiration. Increased levels of hydrogen in the breath indicate insufficient digestion of Lactose.

Certain foods, medications, and cigarettes may affect the accuracy of the Test, so they should be avoided before doing it.

This test applies to both adults and minors. Exhaled hydrogen testing can be performed on all ages and types of patients.
